stART at the Station :: Worcester :: 2010

Worcester loves art and handmade! The traffic in Union Station today was heavy, festive and vendors were selling out! That is a wonderful thing. For as long as stART has been hitting our streets and now our station, people come in numbers, and they are scooping up wonderful gifts of handmade goodness. We purchased two super sweet crocheted hats from Willows Loft, new to stART this year, with incredibly cute knits. Willows Loft hats are available on etsy if you click the link. I should have taken a pic. The short customer is also wearing a fun kitty hat we bought. I hope the vendor catches this so we can find your name. We love the hat and we are planning on wearing it to bed!

A wonderful surprise was finding world renowned calligrapher Maria Thomas with her daughter Molly Shattuck Thomas at stART. If you would like to see her incredible skill in action, calligraphy and zentangle fans alike will love this video, called Betweed. There are alot of Zentangle videos on youtube about 150 as of today, but this one is by Maria herself. She and Rick Roberts are the founders of Zentangle. {Listen to the pen in the very beginning.}

Historically Davis has been a catalyst worldwide for it's publication of art resources. Worcester is incredibly lucky to have a company like Davis, enriching students and teachers with art publications through text and online media. Their stretch is worldwide and they are nestled in downtown Worcester between the RMV and the Worcester Public Library. How appropriate is it that they open their doors to Worcester as they host several art exhibitions a year.

The Perfectionists opened on July 23, with a smashing success. The show features the work of three Worcester talents, Scott Boilard, Howard B. Johnson Jr. and Bryan Davagian. Each artist is quite different in their own right, but the pleasure of viewing each is all in the details. The show of about 40 pieces is showing at Davis Gallery on the third floor of the Printers Building on Portland Street.

Spotlight on Scott Boilard

The art of Scott Boilard has impressed me immensely, since I first saw it several years ago at his solo show at the Bijou Gallery, here in Worcester, Massachusetts. His style is fantastic abstract expressionism. After reading his artist statement, I am blown away at his depth of thought and contemplation when it comes to his art. Each piece is as stunning as the next. The light, the details, the incredible imagination hit you like a tidal wave. With a mind and foresight of an artist completely loyal to his style, Scott constantly surprises and innovates with his spontaneous and subconscious work.

Scott was invited to Pushkin, Russia in 2005 for an artist exchange and representative of Worcester, Massachusetts, as a sister city. He has supported and participated in local art throughout his career. He is an original participant of stART on the Street and participated in our first Cirque du Noir 2008 fundraiser for the Worcester County Food Bank. As a friend and a colleague, I am incredibly fortunate to be inspired by his art on a daily basis. Scott brings his sketch books everywhere and occasionally I devour this more than his painting. His preliminary sketches and brainstorming side notes are worth a king's ransom.

Scott Boilard was recently featured in the 20 Artists of Worcester the concept of Scott Erb of Erb Photography. Portraits taken by Erb of each of the artist in their studio space were showcased, expertly.
